The Ordem dos Engenheiros is the Public Professional Association representing professionals practising engineering in Portugal.
Founded in 1869, with the creation of the Associação dos Engenheiros Civis Portugueses, the Ordem dos Engenheiros was formally established under its current legal designation in 1936. It is independent from state bodies and enjoys administrative, financial, scientific and disciplinary autonomy, being governed by its Statute, last revised in 2024.
The Association regulates access to and practice of the engineering profession, awards the professional title of Engineer and acts as the competent authority for the application of European Union legislation on the recognition of professional qualifications.
In addition to regulating access to and practice of the engineering profession, the Association's mission is to contribute to the defence, promotion and advancement of engineering, to encourage its members' efforts in the scientific, professional and social fields, and to defend the ethics, professional conduct, recognition and qualifications of engineers.
Internally, the Ordem dos Engenheiros is organised into 17 Colleges of Specialisation, reflecting the diversity of engineering disciplines in Portugal.
The Portuguese FEANI Committee was created in 1993.
