ÖIAV is the oldest engineering association in Austria which unites all three groups of employees, i.e. the self-employed, the civil servants (incl. university professors) and the engineers with an academic degree working in industry and commerce.

VÖI has been the association for technical Austrian engineers since 1946. The work done by those engineers corresponds to that which in other countries, for example Germany, is done by engineers from the "Fachhochschulen". These engineers are traditionally educated at Higher Technical Schools. The education is followed by a 3-year training which is not done at Universities but with the aim of an equal qualification.

The professional associations have no official status in Austria, but the opinion of these two Associations on all questions concerning technical matters or education of engineers is not only heard but also taken into consideration.
